Bill does a great job of plotting the arc of Wieners' trails, with lots of movie star references and watching old movies in the bath moments that serve to effectively locate the particular co-ordinates of his life. Particularly psyched to see John Felice and Frank Wright listed among a role-call of artist/poet/musicians who spent extended periods gazing straight into the void. Fantastic setting for Bill Shute’s poetry by Derek Rogers with fragments of speech floating up though ethereal/doomy organ drones and tone in a way that somehow reminds me of Lothar & The Hand People’s classic “Space Hymn” (!!??)... Four Texas Streams remains one of the most evocative Shute’s early works and to hear it this dilated is just fantastic. Hand-numbered edition of 55 copies. 

Texan poet/curator/publisher and all-round force of goddamn nature Bill Shute’s previous spoken word recording was easily one of our most popular sides of collected pomes and it turned a slew of heads onto the musical cadence of his work. This new collection feels even more assured, with Shute’s approach - a combination of intimate internally-implosive wordage, the kind of rhythmic grasp of a improvising musician and a voice that is deeply American while refusing any contemporary definition – serving to bring his impressionistic/documentarian visions of the contours of Now to technicolour life. Shute is a lifer, having been involved in some of the most important under-the-counter-culture moments, from his zine and label The Inner Mystique through his life-affirming column in Black To Comm – when is someone gonna collect those? – through his amazing poetry and music imprint Kendra Steiner Editions. And while Lester Bangs has gone on to be some kind of mainstream touchstone for all that is ‘gonzo’ Shute has maintained his connection to grassroots culture. Junk Sculpture... collects a bunch of his best recent writing 2010-2011, from sketches of nowhere America to the sounds outside your window to verbal constructs inspired by Lennie Tristano, this is the real deal and anyone w/a love of the kind of deeply personal poetics of the Beats and a belief in the magick of the word will find much to affirm in here. I still rate “The Mosquitoes Of La Marque” as one of his best and the closing rendition of it takes me out of myself every time. Can’t recommend this one enough.

Beautiful new limited CD-R that sees Texan poet/author/critic/publisher Bill Shute hook up with guitarist Anthony Guerra (Antipan/Green Blossoms/Vodka Sparrows et al) for an accompanied reading of six long-form poems. It has been a blast to see how Bill Shute’s Kendra Steiner Editions have grown over the past few years, with literally hundreds of poetry chapbooks and now a whole CD wing that runs the gamut of established writers/musicians and newer radical voices all presented in Bill’s highly personal DIY style. It’s also reassuring to see Shute still as creative and enthused as ever after so long in the game when many of his contemporary ‘rock crits’ have either become completely disillusioned and out of touch or been reduced to tossing off parodies of their earlier work. The fact that there’s more to the ‘career path’ of a rock crit as exemplified by the arc of Shute’s trails is a ray of light in a dark cul-de-sac mostly populated by burnouts. And he’s truly at the top of his game here. Shute’s poetry gains a whole new existence from being read out loud and here his slow, hypnotic delivery is perfectly complimented by Guerra’s minimal, clean guitar work. Indeed, there’s an oriental feel of stasis-in-movement to much of the music, with slow wheeling string patterns somewhere between Harry Partch’s Eleven Intrusions or even Heather Leigh’s classic Cuatro/Vocal recording. Indeed, while walking around Glasgow with this on headphones I’m struck by the mood it shares with John Cage and David Tudor’s amazing Indeterminacy box set and reminded of Shute’s classic Cage essay that ran as part of his Inner Mystique column in Black To Comm back in the day. Having only lived with this for a week or so I feel I’ve barely begun to scratch the surface but I know this will be a deep listening companion for a long time to come. Easily Shute’s best recording to date and a remarkable job from Guerra with the usual swank packaging we have come to expect from Black Petal. Highly recommended!

Inspired collaboration between American soundist Marcus Rubio and poet/writer/curator Bill Shute: Only The Imprint... alternates between recordings of Shute reading his poetry – “Oneness And The Sun”, “Objectless” and “The Twenty Fifth Life Of Alcyone” – with radical treatments of sections/snippets/echoes from the reading by Rubio, using techniques like granular synthesis and spectral reduction. The results are startling. Shute has a great, resonant, expressive, reading voice and Rubio inverts this with his treatments, generating cold zones of austere Euro electronics and almost NWW-esque shots of dead air. Indeed, some of the pieces remind me of Nate Young’s Regression experiments, with Shute’s voice variously disembowelled, smear and otherwise dissembled, to the point that it becomes another texture or rhythm in the piece. Rubio would seem to have much in common with John Oswald’s various time-stretching plunderphonic strategies, and the music has that feeling of entire worlds squeezed into seconds, unfolding in rippling rhythms and generating eerie moments of sing-song beauty that feel closer to actual song constructs than ‘mere’ sonic manipulation, with a grandeur and ambition that goes way beyond what you might think the remit entails. And when it switches to Bill’s reading the effect is startling, like a sudden zoom, a crude Jess Franco close-up that feels like a complete inversion of what went before. A great side, highly recommended!
