Brand new LP from the world-beating trio of Dylan Nyoukis (Blood Stereo/Decaer Pinga et al), Karen Constance (Blood Stereo/Smack Music 7 et al) and Bill Nace (Vampire Belt/X.0.4). Forsaking some of the more hysterically subversive Choc Monk strategies, The Maiming is a beautifully evocative late-night hallucination that crosses eerie overlapping loops of unknown provenance with what sounds like tiny waterfalls of steel tears, the distant hum of sleeping cities pulsing several miles beneath the surface of the ocean and slow-mo Z-grade slasher flick atmospherics. The whole atmosphere is supremely melancholy and speaks of totally barren emotional/physical space as eloquently as anything from Mirror, Ingram Marshall or Devillock without abandoning the kind of brut, hands-on brain/fist flashing of associated satellites like Smack Music 7 and Mongoloid Men. Comes with a totally eye-gouging full-colour cover painting by Karen, a great example of her recent Hammer/exploitation form. Highest possible recommendation; some kind of creative peak for all involved. Limited edition of only 410 copies.
